When they start to wear, the question is always the same: do they need replacing, or can they be reconditioned?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer depends on the condition of the part, the type of wear and the condition of the die they work with. In this article we explain the criteria we use to decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How rollers work in a pellet mill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rollers press the raw material against the die so it passes through the holes and is compacted into pellets. Their surface (the profile or corrugation) is what 'grips' the product. When this surface wears, the roller slips, the product doesn't compact properly and the pellet mill loses capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs of roller wear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pellet mill produces less for the same power consumption.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The roller slips or jams more often.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The surface profile has flattened or shows uneven wear.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Noise or overheating in the roller bearings.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Uneven wear between rollers on the same pellet mill.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When rollers can be reconditioned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A roller can be reconditioned when the wear is superficial and the body of the part is in good condition. In these cases, the working profile can be restored and the roller put back into service. In our <a href=\"\/en\/industrial-machining-lleida\/\">machining workshop<\/a> we manufacture and grind made-to-measure parts, including for machinery with no spares available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even, superficial wear on the profile.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>No cracks or deformations in the roller body.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Bearings and shaft in good condition or easy to replace.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to replace them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the wear is deep, there are cracks or deformation, or the roller has already been reconditioned several times, replacement is the safest option and, in the long run, the most economical. A roller in poor condition also speeds up die wear, so the real cost of not replacing it is higher than it seems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deep or uneven wear that makes it impossible to restore the profile.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Cracks, impact damage or deformation.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Previous reconditioning has already reduced the material available.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The die also needs replacing, and the whole set should work under the same conditions.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rollers and die: best checked together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The die and rollers work as a set. Checking them together lets you set the gap between them correctly and decide whether it makes sense to replace one or both.
